Court Says Tribal Casinos Must Heed Labor Laws

The US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled for a second time that casinos in Michigan operated by Indian tribes must obey orders from the National Labor Relations Board. In this case, an employee lost her job at the Soaring Eagle Casino for her union organizing activities. The
NLRB ordered the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe to re-instate the employee with back pay. The tribe argued the federal agency has no jurisdiction. But the Court of Appeals disagreed. Last month, the court rejected a similar argument by the Sault Sainte Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
