Deborah Brown Featured In WMU Jazz Masters Event

Senya Alman

Each year, Western Michigan University invites a recognized master of jazz to perform with students and faculty in a showcase concert. This year, that artist was singer Deborah Brown.

Performing in nightclubs, concerts, jazz festivals, on television, and radio sound stages, Brown has made a name for herself with appearances in more than 50 countries around the world. She has 14 recordings as a lead and is featured on many others as a special guest artist.

During the interview, Ms. Brown discusses her upbringing in Kansas City, Missouri, and how a film showing of Sweet Charity changed her life. Saying "yes" whenever she can has allowed her to travel the world and work with some of the finest musicians. Greg Jasperse, director of WMU's Gold Company, explains the qualities she possesses that put her among the greats.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
