(MPRN-Detroit) Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the city is ready to take 150 Syrian refugee families over three years.
Metro Detroit already has the largest Middle East population in the nation. Duggan says there’s housing, jobs, and a welcoming community waiting for Syrian refugees. He says the federal government’s process for vetting refugees is already strict, and there’s no need to wait.
“An approach that says we’ll fight the terrorists, but will provide refuge to their victims is what this country is all about and we’re prepared in Detroit to do our share.”
Governor Rick Snyder says he wants to delay further action on bringing Syrian refugees to the state until there’s a review of the vetting process. He said in September that he wants Michigan to be a destination for people fleeing violence in the Middle East.
