Western Michigan University President John Dunn says he plans to be busy for his final year on the job. Dunn announced Monday that he will step down June 30th, 2017.
Dunn says many tasks remain while he is on the job.
"I really believe that the amount of work that needs to be done is always on going. Universities never stand still, I certainly don't have any intent of standing still. "
Dunn says announcing his retirement now will give the university time to conduct a national search for his successor.
"This has been a conversation that we engaged in starting a little bit last spring and a bit through the summer. Everyone is in agreement that transitions need to be handled very very carefully."
Dunn will serve as President Emeritus for a year after stepping down. Western's eighth president says he plans to be helpful to the next president without “being in the way.”
Western Board of Trustees Chairman Ken Miller says a search committee will begin looking for Dunn’s successor immediately. Miller says it will include faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as the wider community.
