(MPRN-Lansing) The Legislature has begun its two-month summer recess. State lawmakers wrapped up work on a Detroit Public Schools bailout.

But there are other issues still waiting on a resolution. One of them is an overhaul of Michigan energy policy to help decide how to provide heat and electricity as utilities shut down coal plants.

State Senator Mike Nofs of Battle Creek is chairman of the Senate energy committee. Nofs says he’ll spend the summer trying to get closer to a consensus.

“If you have an idea that I haven’t thought of, or someone of the groups that we’re working with haven’t thought of, I’m willing to look at it to make the legislation that much better.”

There are still big disagreements about renewable energy incentives, and allowing alternative suppliers to compete with existing utilities.

The Legislature also has to figure out how to handle the growing number of medical marijuana clinics, and tackle reforms to save money on the costs of incarceration.
