EPA Fast-Tracks Cleanup Behind Otsego Township Dam

The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the responsible parties for cleanup on Kalamazoo River to remove PCBs upstream of the Otsego Township Dam. The old dam is in danger of falling apart - which would send toxic PCBs down river.

Because of the contaminants, the Department of Natural Resources has had to maintain the dam until the PCBs could be removed. The EPA order forces Georgia-Pacific, Weyerhaeuser, and International Paper to remove the PCBs by spring of 2018. According to a press release, the EPA issued the order because the responsible parties failed to reach an agreement on the work.
