Fewer Monarch Butterflies This Season Due To Mexico Storm

You may have noticed fewer Monarch butterflies this summer. Michigan’s Monarchs spend winter in central Mexico and then migrate back up to the northern United States in May and June.

Though Monarchs have been in decline for a number of reasons, Michigan State University entomologists say a severe storm in Mexico killed 50 to 70 percent of the adult population. However, MSU experts say the number of adult Monarch butterflies has increased since mid-July.
