Governor Rick Snyder has ordered flags lowered at state buildings on Thursday in honor of a former state lawmaker from Barry County.
Carroll Newton died Sunday. He was 96 years old. A news release from the governor's office says Newton's "dedication to both his community and our state helped lay a strong foundation to keep Michigan moving forward today."
Newton served for 10 years in the state Legislature, beginning in 1955. He later served as assistant auditor general and deputy state treasurer under Governor Bill Milliken.
According to the governor's office, a funeral service for Newton is being held today in Nashville.
