Jazz Trumpet Polymath Randy Brecker To Perform At WMU

John Abbott

A printout of his discography, single-spaced in small print, is sixteen pages long. And it's missing all of his recordings of the last nine years, including the 2013 Grammy Award-winning Night in Calisia.

Randy Brecker, a trumpeter who finds himself welcome among almost any group of musicians, is the featured artist on Western Michigan University's Jazz Masters Series Thursday night.

Professor of trumpet Scott Cowan and WMU Jazz Studies director Tom Knific preview his concert, discussing Brecker's groundbreaking career, his relationship with his brother, saxophonist Michael Brecker, and the last three weeks of preparation by the Western Jazz Quartet, the Advanced Jazz Combo, the University Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz Lab Band in anticipation of Randy Brecker's guest appearance.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
