Jim Siver says an attorney knows he's representing a client, and has to reach consensus on tough issues. The lawyer says he would do the same thing if elected to the state House.
Siver is one of eight Republicans running in the 80th state House District. The seat is currently vacant because of September's expulsion of Cindy Gamrat. She is also running for the seat that she held for about eight months. A special primary is on Tuesday. The special general election will be in March.
As Michigan searches for additional money for road repair and construction, Siver says all money collected from fuel taxes should go to roads. He says that combined with matching money from the federal government should be enough to pay for roads without raising taxes.
The state has been debating expanding protections against discrimination to LGBT people under the state's Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act. Siver says he would support such an expansion. He says as a lawyer, he's sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Siver says people should not discriminated against in seeking housing, employment or adopting children.
Siver says he supports the common core system of education. He says children who move from one part of the country to another should be taught the same subject matter in a new school district.
