Judge Orders HP to Turn Over Code to State So it Can Hike Fees for Road Repairs

MPRN

(MPRN-Grand Rapids) The state has dodged a bullet when it comes to implementing its new road funding plan. Kent County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Yates is ordering Hewlett-Packard to turn over computer information the state needs to implement the plan.

The new funding system relies in part on raising vehicle registration fees. But the Michigan secretary of state’s office doesn’t have the source code it needs to make those changes to its computer system.

Yates wrote in his opinion that the state owns the source code because it paid for it. And he wrote that all Michigan citizens “have a vested interest in the effective implementation of the of the road funding plan.”

Yates gave HP until the end of the week to turn over the source code.
