Kalamazoo College officials Wilson-Oyelaren's accomplishments during that time include an updated curriculum, an emphasis on diversity at the liberal arts school, and the building of several new facilities. They include the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership.

In an official statement, Wilson-Oyelaran says it’s been a “singular honor” to lead the college. She announced her decision to step down during a campus-wide meeting Thursday.

Born in Los Angeles, Wilson-Oyelaren studied at several colleges and universities in the U.S., Britain, Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Her academic speciality is child development and early childhood education.

Kalamazoo College Board of Trustees Chairwoman Charlotte Hall says it will begin looking for Wilson-Oyelaren's successor. She says the goal is to have the new president on campus by July 1, 2016. The search committee will include students as well as faculty, staff, and board members.
