The City of Kalamazoo will hold two public forums July 26 and 27 on new ordinances to regulate medical marijuana. Kalamazoo City Attorney Clyde Robinson says they would affect different aspects related to medical marijuana facilities in the city.

"What is being proposed for city commission consideration are three ordinances; two of them are zoning amendments, and the other is a police power regulatory licensing ordinance."

Robinson says public input is important because the ordinances would open the door to new medical marijuana facilities in Kalamazoo, if city commissioners approve them.

"We have an opportunity to permit other types of medical marijuana facilities in our community, and what does the community at large think of expanding that authorization, if you will, to other types of operations."

Robinson says public input now is important because the ordinances can still be changed.

"I want to make it clear (that) these are drafts. Nothing is written in stone. As I like to say, the cement is still wet."

The forums will include short presentations by city officials. They'll be held Wednesday evening from 6 to 8:30 and Thursday afternoon from 2 to 4:30. Both forums will be held at Kalamazoo City Hall in the City Commission Chambers.
