The Kalamazoo Nature Center unveils a new solar panel array Wednesday to mark the summer solstice. The panels generate a third of the power needed to run the Nature Center.

CEO Bill Rose, says that not only helps hold down power bills. Rose says it also sends an important message to the community

“And this is a huge visual tool that we can use to teach people about where their power comes from, what alternatives are there, and you know, how they can actually become personally engaged.”

The project is a partnership with Consumers Energy and Michigan-based solar energy company Helios Solar. Rose, says the project is a symbol of its dedication to sustainability.

“All of that is meant to produce, you know, electrical power for the Nature Center, and then at the same time to serve as a very noticeable commitment on the part of the Nature Center to go to renewable power sources.”

The ceremony this morning starts at 10:00 Wednesday morning and will feature brief presentations, and a ribbon cutting.
