Kevin Travis Says he Wants to Give Moderate Republicans a Voice in Special State House Election

WMUK

Kevin Travis says his basic political philosophy is “we don’t care what you do with your personal life, just don’t expect us to pay for it.”

Travis is one of eight Republicans on the ballot for a special state House election in the 80th District, which includes Allegan County. Asked for an example of moderation, Travis says he is for legalizing marijuana. He says that would bring more tax revenue into the state.

The 80th state House district special election was called when Cindy Gamrat was expelled from the state House in September. The state House found that Gamrat and fellow Representative Todd Courser used state resources to conceal their affair. Travis says before the scandal broke, Gamrat was only representing a “very small fringe of voters” in the state House.

Travis says he would support a road funding package that doesn’t raise taxes. He says the focus should be on what he calls “smart growth.” Travis says he would prioritize road funding projects that help economic growth.

In addition to the special election in Allegan County, there is also a special election in the Lapeer area for the seat vacated when Todd Courser resigned from the House. Both Courser and Gamrat are running in the districts they used to represent. Travis says if he and Courser are both elected, he would not vote to seat Courser. Travis says that would be a waste of time, because he believes Courser would be expelled shortly after taking office.

All of the candidates on the ballot for Tuesday's special Republican primary in the 80th state House District have been invited for an interview on WMUK this week.
