Legislature Approves $50-Million To Bail Out Detroit Schools

MPRN

(MPRN-Lansing) The Legislature has sent Governor Rick Snyder a short-term bailout of the Detroit public schools.

It would send the district almost $50 million dollars to ensure the schools don’t run out of money and it buys time for the Legislature to work on a longer-term rescue plan.

“So, there is progress going on, but it’s critically important we get the $50 million addressed,”

said Snyder. The governor says he prefers a plan adopted this week by the state Senate, but he’s looking forward to what the House comes up with after the Legislature’s spring break.

“Obviously, they’ll have some different perspectives,” he said. “But let’s see, can we work through a package that we can get both chambers to agree to.”

The Senate adopted a plan this week to provide $715 million over 10 years from tobacco settlement money to pay for educating students while local taxes would go to pay off debt.
