LGBT Rights Group Says Ballot Drive Isn't Likely for Anti-Discrimination Laws

WMUK

(Lansing-Gongwer) Leaders of a statewide group that works for the rights of LGBT people say a ballot drive isn’t likely to expand discrimination protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

Sommer Foster with Michigan Equality tells the GongwerNews Service that collecting petition signatures to put the issue on the statewide ballot would be too expensive. Republican legislative leaders say they will likely take up a religious freedom bill soon. But Senate Majority Leader ArlanMeekhoff says he doesn’t expect lawmakers to take up any expansion of the Elliot Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect gay and transgender people from discrimination.
