LHI: Jon Boyd on Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Jon Boyd

Let's Hear It host Cara Lieurance and Jon Boyd, a senior majoring in music at Western Michigan University, discuss the life of Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a violinist by training who created one of the most popular pieces of the turn of the last century, Hiawatha's Wedding Feast.

Tuesdays in February on Let's Hear It, Cara Lieurance and Jon Boyd illuminate the music of classical composers of color. A violist with a lively interest in sharing the rich history of music performed and written by individuals of mixed or non-European ancestries, Jon discusses composers such as Joseph Bolougne, Chevalier de Saint-George, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, and George Walker. Each program will also feature a concert highlight of the Sphinx Virtuosi, a touring ensemble of award-winning Black and Latino musicians.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
