LHI: Jon Boyd on Duke Ellington

Bettman Archive

WMUK contributor Jon Boyd looks at the ups and downs of the career of Duke Ellington, who moved from Washington, DC to New York to pursue music when he was 20 years old.

Still known today as one of the most famous American musicians of the 20th century, Jon explains that Duke Ellington's illustrious career had its share of stress and disappointment. Today, audiences can discover his more neglected works in the variety of long-form suites he composed, including Jon's pick, Three Black Kings.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
