LHI: Jon Boyd on Joseph Bolougne, Chevalier de St-George

Jon Boyd

Let's Hear It host Cara Lieurance and Jon Boyd, a senior majoring in music at Western Michigan University, discuss the extraordinary life and career of Joseph Bolougne, Chevalier de Saint-George. Born to a French nobleman and Nanon, a Wolof former slave, he was an esteemed  violinist and swordsman who cut quite a figure in 18th century France.

Tuesdays in February on Let's Hear It, Cara Lieurance and Jon Boyd will illuminate the music of classical composers of color. A violist with a lively interest in sharing the rich history of music performed and written by individuals of mixed or non-European ancestries, Jon will discuss composers such as Joseph Bolougne, Chevalier de Saint-George, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, and George Walker. Each program will also feature a concert highlight of the Sphinx Virtuosi, a touring ensemble of award-winning Black and Latino musicians.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
