Saxophonist Sam Pilnick, guitarist Andrew Saliba, bassist Mike Horrigan and drummer Steve Perry, all Western Michigan University School of Music grads or soon-to-be grads, have enjoyed gigging together for over a year at various venues around Kalamazoo and west Michigan. WMUK contributor Craig Freeman asked them to come to WMUK's Takeda studio to play some of their current favorites.

In between their performances of two Pilnick originals, "Maple" and "Ball Pops Out," and a creative cover of "Pure Imagination" from Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Pilnick, Saliba, Perry and Horrigan discuss their paths into playing jazz, and they address some of the current issues that affect their lives as jazz musicians.

The Sam Pilnick Project has recorded one EP, titled East Coast Transplant, available at Pilnick's website and at live shows.
