Michigan Senate committee approves bill exempting Michigan guns from federal regulation

Melissa Benmark, WKAR

A state Senate committee has approved legislation that would exempt Michigan-made guns from federal firearms regulations.

The Detroit Free Press reportsthat the bill cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 3-1 vote Wednesday. Democrat Steve Bieda of Warren cast the only no vote saying it would invite court challenges over its Constitutionality.

The GongwerNews Service reports that Republican State Senator Tonya Schitmaker of Lawton voted for the legislation, despite raising some of the same Constitutional concerns.

The action in Michigan and other states comes after President Obama has proposed new federal legislation regarding guns.
