Narcotics Task Force to Release Recommendations

MPRN

(MPRN-Lansing) A task force will release recommendations Monday on how to address the growing problem of addiction to prescription narcotics and heroin.

The state Department of Health and Human Services says more than 1,500 people a year in Michigan die from a drug overdose, and the culprit is usually a prescription painkiller. Law enforcement officials say many addicts turn to heroin after their prescriptions run out.

President Obama has also made combatingopioid addiction a national priority, including more training for doctors who prescribe painkillers. The Michigan task force is led by Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley. It has come up with more than two dozen recommendations.
