New Democratic Party Chairman Would Like to See Redistricting Change on Ballot

MPRN

(MPRN-Lansing) The new chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party says he’d like to see a redistricting overhaul on the ballot next year.

Brandon Dillon say he thinks the current system leaves too much authority with legislators who have a big stake in how the lines are drawn. Dillon says Democrats certainly have an interest in re-districting reform. But speaking on the Michigan Public Television Show Off the Record, he says the party and Democratic politicians should have a hands-off policy when it comes to a ballot question.

“In order for this to be successful, I think it’s important that the people to take the lead on this are people that just care that the system is broken.”

Dillon says he’d also like to see a 2016 ballot question to put LGBT protections into the state’s civil rights law. But he says the Democratic Party is unlikely to make campaign donations to either effort.
