Next Step Not Clear for "E-Cigarette" Legislation

WMUK

It’s unclear if lawmakers will develop new legislation to regulate e-cigarettes in Michigan. Governor Snyder voted a bill on Friday that would have banned the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors.

In his veto message, the governor said that the legislation didn’t go far enough because it wouldn’t treat e-cigarettes like tobacco products.

Health groups praised the governor's veto, saying the state needs tighter regulation on the devices.

The state Senator who sponsored the legislation says he doesn’t support making major changes. Republican Rick Jones told the Gongwer News Service that he supports the bill that was vetoed by the governor. But Jones says he does not support the additional taxes and regulation that would come with designating e-cigarettes as tobacco products.
