No Redistricting Measure for Ballot This Year

Michigan voters will not see a proposal on redistricting on their November ballots. That’s even though many Democrats have said they’d like to change the state’s redistricting rules. Last year, the US Supreme Court ruled a commission unattached to a legislature could draw up legislative districts. The Gongwer News Service reports that was exciting for people who say that when the legislature draws the maps, it creates districts favorable to the party with the most power at the time. But supporters of taking the issue to the voters say they decided to hold off on a proposal for this year. They say they need time to educate the public about how redistricting works.
