Redistricting Overhaul Campaign Ready To Turn In Petitions

(MPRN-Lansing) Michigan voters could be asked to take the power to draw legislative and congressional district lines away from state lawmakers. A ballot campaign plans to turn in 450,000 petition signatures Monday.

That would be more than enough to put the proposed amendment to the state constitution on the November 2018 ballot. But first, the signatures need to be certified by a state elections board.

Katie Fahey is with the “Voters Not Politicians” campaign. She says the signatures were gathered by volunteers in all 83 Michigan counties. She says having legislators draw legislative and congressional district lines invites abuse.

“People understand that their politicians have an incentive to be kind of crooked and corrupt.”

The proposal asks voters to create an independent citizens commission that would draw congressional and legislative district lines.
