Republican Aaron Miller Runs for State House in Saint Joseph, Cass Counties

Republican Aaron Miller says he wants to bring "common sense" solutions to the Michigan Legislature.

The 27 year old teacher from Sturgis emerged from a four-way Republican primary to win his party's nomination in the 59th state House district. It includes Saint Joseph County and a large portion of Cass County.

Miller says he favors strong standards for education, but says the "common core" standards remove too much local control.

On the issue of roads, Miller says gas tax revenue should be dedicated to repair and maintenance, although he says that will create shortfalls in other areas. Miller says he has not decided yet if a gas tax increase is needed in Michigan. He says the state should examine its taxes on things like diesel fuel to bring them in line with other states.

Miller opposes Medicaid expansion, which was approved by the Legislature last year. Miller says he's concerned about the state being on the hook for the cost of expansion after the federal dollars are longer available.

Running what he calls a "grass roots" campaign, Miller says he is refusing contributions from single issue political advocacy groups. He says turning down money makes him more accountable to the voters, rather than groups making large campaign contributions.
