Republican leaders in the Legislature say opposition from Governor Rick Snyder will not stop them from trying to repeal the state’s prevailing wage law.
It says state-funded construction projects have to pay workers union-level wages. State Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof made repealing that the first bill he sponsored this year.
“If you just look at our school systems and the ability for them to save money on construction –it’s a high priority. I don’t think there’s any community that wouldn’t want to save money for their taxpayers.”
Meekhof says he’s going to be concerned first about getting the bill through the Legislature before he starts worrying about whether the governor would sign it. The governor says the prevailing wage encourages people to get training for skilled jobs.
