Grand Valley State University researcher Kevin Strychar says climate change is having a “direct negative effect” on the great lakes. He explains those effects in a chapter of a new report from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.
Strychar says the impacts include a hit to the lakes’ “recreational value,” a greater presence of invasive species and pathogens, and less drinkable water.
The report finds that scientists need better tools for tracking and responding to those changes as they happen in “real time.”
