Saugatuck Fest Continues With Messiaen's Quartet For The End Of Time

Drew Le

Grand Rapids Symphony principal cellist AliciaEppinga is one of the featured artists in this week's performances at the Chamber Music Festival ofSaugatuck. The program, called "Revelations," is performed on Thursday and repeated Friday. It's the third in the six-week series of concerts held at the Saugatuck Woman's Club, now in its 29th year.

The concert begins with a trio for violin, viola and piano by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The Trio élégiaque No. 1, according to Eppinga, is rarely performed, but offers the chance to hear Rachmaninoff's ideas as a young composer.

French composer Oliver Messiaen's Quartet For The End Of Time concludes the program. Eppinga says it attempts to capture the moments just before and after time ceases to exist, as described in Revelations in the Bible. Written during his experience as a German prisoner-of-war, the Messiaen's devout pacifism convinced his captors to allow him to compose the work. The piece was premiered in the camp.
