Governor Rick Snyder says more work needs to be done, but there is now a timeline to plan for re-settling refugees from the Middle East in Michigan.
That’s after he called for a “pause” in a program to bring families from Syria to the state. This week, a council of state governors had a conference call that included a lengthy conversation with the US Secretary of Homeland Security. The governor says progress is being made.
“The federal government has acknowledged that these are reasonable questions that are good ones to ask, and we have a chance to get the answers and move forward. I’m interested in actually getting it so we can continue to be a welcoming place," he says.
Snyder says the next step is another conversation in January between governors and state and federal security officials. He says re-settlements currently underway are not affected by the security review.
