Snyder Signs Bills Requiring Sales Tax on Internet Purchases

WMUK

(MPRN-Lansing) Many online shoppers in Michigan will have to pay a six percent tax on purchases starting in October. Governor Rick Snyder signed the legislation on Thursday.

It would require online retailers without a physical location in Michigan – mainly Amazon.com - to collect the tax at the point of purchase. Snyder says the bills make the system fairer for Michigan business that already have to collect the tax.

“We want a fair, level playing environment for people to be successful,” he told reporters at a bill signing ceremony. “That’s the way it should be. Government should not the influence on where someone purchases something.”

Michiganders are already supposed to declare their internet purchases every year when they file their income taxes. The new law is expected to boost state revenues by about $60 million a year.
