Snyder Signs Road Funding Bills

Governor Rick Snyder has signed a package of bills designed to raise money to fix the state’s crumbling roads and bridges. But their provisions won’t go into effect unless they’re approved by voters in May.

The legislation would replace the state’s current gas tax with a wholesale tax on fuel. It would also raise the state sales tax from six to seven percent. The sales tax money would go to schools and local governments, which would otherwise lose out with the end of the current fuel tax.

Snyder’s office says the bills would raise about 1.3 billion dollars a year for road and transportation projects.
