Solo Flutist To Present New, Dream-Induced, Project With Dancers, Video Art

Martha Councell-Vargas has been pushing her boundaries as a solo artist. In her 2013 release Gran Danzon, she presented a collection of rarely heard music of the Americas for flute and piano, and followed it up in 2016 with Fantasíawhich explored the unaccompanied flute traditions of the American continents. This Friday, Councell-Vargas's live performance will incorporate movement, dance, original videography, and selections of European and American flute repertoire.

In the interview, the Western Michigan University flute professor explains that she had been wrestling with feelings of boredom over presenting a traditional flute recital when she had a vivid dream. In the dream, she was not only playing, but moving, dancing, even flying. Enlisting the talents of choreographer Whitney Moncrief, multimedia artist Richard Johnson, the Western Dance Project, costumer Patricia Plasko, and pianist Silvia Roederer, she prepared a unique concert experience, called the Illustrated Flute Project. The free concert is Friday, April 1 in the Dalton Center Multi-Media Room at Western Michigan University.
