Universities look at new tuition ideas for attracting students. A new report finds an increase in college graduation rates. WMU announces kickoff times for all but two games in the upcoming football season. the Growlers get the first win over the rival Bombers as Kalamazoo and Battle Creek meet on the baseball field. 

In the battle for student enrollment, Lake Superior State has introduced a new tool. The school has announced a world-wide one rate tuition. Beginning in the fall, ALL undergrad students will pay the same per-credit-hour cost. The worldwide tuition rate at Lake Superior State takes effect in the fall. (WCMU) Western Michigan University approved a change last year making out of state tuition 1.25 % higher than the rate paid by in-state students. It resulted in a major cut to tuition for out of state students at Western.

A new report finds Michigan’s community colleges and universities are doing a better job at helping students earn degrees. The state’s Center for Educational Performance and Information has been tracking graduation rates for the past decade. The center’s data shows incrementally improved graduation rates since 2009. Over the last several years fewer students have been graduating high school, and of the ones that do, fewer of them have been attending college. (Michigan Radio

Buoys that monitor temperatures on the Great Lakes recorded a steep increase in water temperature this week. Researchers say Lake Erie is the warmest at 64 degrees and Lake Superior the coldest at 42 degrees. That’s about ten degrees higher than it was at this time last year. Parts of Lake Michigan are reported to be registering in the 70s.

Western Michigan University has announced game times for 10 of its 12 games for this year’s football season. The Broncos opening game against Syracuse will kick off at 6:00 on Friday night August 31st at Waldo Stadium. The Communivercity game against Delaware State will begin at 7:00 September 15th. Western will play consecutive Thursday night games at home, October 25th against Toledo and November 1st versus Ohio. The Broncos’ regular season ends with a Tuesday night game at home against Northern Illinois. The game time has not been set for the homecoming game October 6th against Eastern Michigan.

In baseball, a six run fourth inning gave Kalamazoo a 9-4 win at Battle Creek Thursday. The Growlers and Bombers will play again Friday night this time in Kalamazoo at Homer Stryker Field.
