Berrien County Register of Deeds Lori Jarvis has died.MLive reports that Jarvis was killed Thursday in a single vehicle crash in Hagar Township. Police says speed or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine. Jarvis had been Berrien County’s Register of Deeds since 2001. In a statement, West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton calls Jarvis’ death a tremendous loss for our community.

Governor Rick Snyder rolled out a new state rulethat sets a goal of eliminating lead service lines in every local water system in the state. He says Michigan needs to act because the federal lead and copper rule is confusing and hasn’t been updated in 26 years. He says that was a contributing cause to the Flint water crisis. Michigan’s new rule requires a stepped-up pace to replace pipes if lead is detected in a water system. The rule does not affect lead lines inside homes and businesses.

A former Western Michigan University basketball player has been convicted of armed robbery, but found not guilty of second degree murder and felony firearms charges.
