Southwest Michigan Today For Monday February 19, 2018

Kalamazoo Central High School students launch a petition calling for "sensible gun control policy."   Another Republican gets in the race for state Senate in St. Joseph, Cass and Berrien Counties. WMU wraps up the first weekend of the baseball season. The K-Wings lose in overtime, but get a point in the standings.

A change.org petition started by Kalamazoo Central High School students has collected more than 59,000 signatures calling for a responsible gun control policy. The Kalamazoo Gazette says students in K-Central’s AP Comparative Government Class decided to launch the petition titled Students Fighting Guns Since Adults Won’t, after last week’s shooting at a school in Florida that left 17 people dead. The petition will be delivered to Southwest Michigan Congressman Fred Upton, Michigan’s two U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, as well as other lawmakers.

State Representative Dave Pagel says he will run for state Senate in the district that includes St. Joseph, Cass and Berrien Counties. The St. Joseph Benton Harbor Herald-Palladium says the Berrien Springs Republican will run for the seat currently held by Republican Senator John Proos. Proos cannot run for re-election because of terms limits. Pagel’s fellow Republican Representative Kim LaSata has also announced she is running for the Senate seat. One Democrat, former Hagar Township Clerk Ian Haight is running for the 21st state Senate seat.

Western Michigan concluded the opening weekend of the baseball season with a 10-4 loss to Purdue in Emerson, Georgia. The Broncos lost all three games against the Boilermakers over the weekend. Western will travel to Buies Creek, North Carolina for three games against three different schools. The first will be Friday against Miami of Ohio.

In hockey, Kalamazoo lost to Cincinnati 5-4 in overtime. The K-Wings earned a point in the ECHL standings. Kalamazoo will host Wheeling on Wednesday at the Wings Event Center.
