Southwest Michigan Today For Monday January 15, 2018

Kalamazoo County health officials encourage people to get their flu shot. Michigan's State Treasurer says lawmakers should be careful about fixing a problem that could cause a state income tax increase. WMU gets victories for men's tennis and gymnastics.

The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Departmentsays it’s not too late for people to get vaccinated against the flu. A worse than usual flu season has been reported so far. The season for influenza usually begins in October and can last until May. Bronson has also announced changes in its visitation policy for all of its hospitals during flu season. That includes requiring visitors in most areas of the hospital to be at least 15 years old. Immediate family members of any age can visit Bronson Birthplace in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. But visitors under the age of 15 must wear a mask.

The state treasurer says fixing a problem that could cause a spike in state income taxes should be a part of a larger discussion of budget and spending issues. The problem was created by the federal tax overhaul adopted last year by congressional Republicans and signed by President Trump. The overhaul zeroes out the personal exemption. Governor Rick Snyder’s administration has proposed to solve the issue by guaranteeing that Michigan taxpayers can continue to claim the personal exemption, and then boosting it in coming years. But on the Michigan Public Television program Off the Record, state Treasurer Nick Khouri says the Legislature should be careful on how it returns revenue to taxpayers.

Western Michigan University’s Men’s Tennis team opened the spring season with two wins on Sunday. The Broncos beat Xavier and Detroit Mercy at West Hills Athletic Club.

WMU’s Gymnastics team won its first meet of the season. The Broncos defeated Illinois-Chicagoon Sunday at University Arena.
