Southwest Michigan Today For Monday January 22, 2018

Two members of MSU's Board of Trustees won't seek re-election, one of them is calling for university president Lou Anna Simon to resign. Former Kalamazoo State Representative Ed LaForge is remembered for his commitment to social justice. The K-Wings extend their point streak to five games with a win Sunday.

Two Michigan State University trustees say they won’t run for re-election this year. The Detroit Press says Board chairman Brian Breslin does not plan to seek re-election. Over the weekend trustee Mitch Lyons issued a statement calling for MSU president Lou Anna Simon to resign amidst the scandal involving sports doctor Larry Nassar. In the statement Lyons also said he would not seek re-election. Breslin and Lyons are the only members of MSU’s board up for election this year. Lyons statement runs counter to the vote of confidence Michigan State’s board of trustees gave to Simon on Friday.

Former State Representative and Kalamazoo City Commissioner Ed LaForge has died. The Kalamazoo Gazette says LaForge passed away on Friday at his home in Lawton. LaForge served 10 years on the Kalamazoo City Commission, before his three terms representing the 60th state House district. LaForge was known for his commitment to social justice and his work for people in poverty. Ed LaForge was 82 years old.

In hockey, Kalamazoo beat Indy Sunday 6-2. The K-Wings have earned at least a point in their last five games, with four wins. Kalamazoo will play at Wheeling on Wednesday.
