Southwest Michigan Today: Monday March 5, 2018

A threat against the high school closes Hastings Area Schools. A look at how police responded to a shooting at Central Michigan University. WMU softball and baseball win in Florida. Two games at University Arena Monday to start the MAC basketball tournaments. 

Hastings Area Schools are closed Monday. MLive reports that parents in the district received a robo call telling them schools were closed to investigate a threat made against the high school.

The suspect in Friday’s shooting on the Central Michigan University campus remains hospitalized and in police custody. WCMUhas a timeline of police interactions with James Davis Jr. before and after he allegedly shot and killed his parents.

In softball,Western Michigan beat Pennsylvania 4-3Sunday in Clearwater, Florida. The Broncos will face the Quakers again on Wednesday, the will also take on Niagara, that same afternoon.

In baseball, Western Michigan beat St. Bonaventure 1-0 in 10 innings Sunday. The Broncos swept the weekend series from the Bonnies in Port Charlotte, Florida. Western will play the Detroit Tigers prospects Monday in a game at Lakeland.

Western Michigan will host games to begin both the men’s and women’s Mid-American Conference basketball tournaments Monday night. The Bronco women’s team will take on Bowling Green at 5:30. Then Western’s men’s team faces Arkon at approximately 7:45. The winners of Monday night’s games at University Arena advance to the quarterfinals of the MAC tournament in Cleveland.

In hockey, Kalamazoo lost to Cincinnati Sunday 3-2. The K-Wings will host Fort Wayne on Friday at the Wings Event Centre.
