Another attempt to pass an urban livestock ordinance in Battle Creek. A federal judge says the election to replace former Congressman John Conyers can wait until the fall. WMU baseball gets at win over Michigan State in East Lansing.

Battle Creek City Commissioners plan to try again to pass an urban livestock ordinance. The Battle Creek Enquirer says the proposal includes changes from one introduced last year. The ordinance would only permit residential hens, other animals would not be allowed. The number of licenses for keeping hens would be limited to a maximum of 20. The ordinance will be introduced at the Battle Creek City Commission meeting on April 17th.

A federal judge says the congressional seat vacated by Detroit Democrat John Conyers must remain open until elections are held in November. Conyers resigned last December amid allegations that he sexually harassed staff members. Governor Rick Snyder decided to wait to fill the seat until the already-scheduled primary and general elections…saying it would give prospective candidates more time to prepare and save taxpayers the cost of funding a special election. A group of voters sued…arguing leaving the seat open for almost a year violated the Constitutional right of voters in the majority African-American district to equal protection. Snyder had previously set an election for an open seat in a majority white district within about two months. But now a federal judge has ruled that there is no evidence Snyder’s move was racially-motivated…adding that the Governor has both a legitimate reason and the legal right to set a special election at a date of his choosing.
