State officials have asked a judge to dismiss Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s request that he be declared an eligible candidate for governor. An attorney for Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said in a court filing that there is no actual controversy over whether El-Sayed is eligible for the ballot. A story in Bridge earlier this year raised the question about whether the former Detroit Health Department Director’s time in New York made him ineligible to run for governor this year. The Michigan Constitution says a candidate for governor must be a qualified elector in the state for four years before the election. El-Sayed tells the Detroit News that the Secretary of State’s filing shows that questions over his eligibility are a manufactured controversy. But he says attorneys are still reviewing possible options.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley filed petition signatures Tuesday to appear on the Republican primary ballot in August. He’s running to replace Governor Rick Snyder, who cannot run again due to term limits. Calley says he wants to keep up the work started by Snyder over the past seven years. He says that’s fueled Michigan’s recovery from the Great Recession. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, state Senator Patrick Colbeck, and Doctor Jim Hines have also filed to appear on the GOP ballot in August.

Western Michigan junior Jordan Kurth has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division softball pitcher of the week. She picked up both victories as the Broncos won two out of three games at Ball State over the weekend. Western’s game at Notre Dame was called off Tuesday due to weather. The Broncos host Toledo for a three game series beginning Friday.
