A Kalamazoo area dam is slated for removal. The Upjohn Institute will study what "college promise" programs mean for pay, debt and where recipients live after graduation. WMU men's basketball gets a win on the road.
A dam that’s doing little more than making it hard for fish to migrate is expected to come out of a Kalamazoo waterway this year. The Environmental Protection Agency says it plans to take the Alcott Street dam off Portage Creek at the Bryant Mill Pond by the end of the summer. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that the dam went in 90 years ago. Its removal will include taking out contaminated sediment around the edges. Fish habitats are expected to improve once the dam is gone.
The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research will study the impact of “College Promise” scholarship programs on work force development, In a news release the institute says it received a $360,000 grant from the Strada Education Network to examine the future earnings and debt of students who benefit from programs like the Kalamazoo Promise. They will also study where students locate after graduation. The Upjohn Institute says it will work with researchers around the country. In addition to the Kalamazoo Promise, they will study the effects of programs in Pittsburgh , El Dorado, Arkansas and the state of Tennessee.
In men’s basketball, Western Michigan won at Eastern Michigan Tuesday night 71-57. Sophomore Brandon Johnson led the Broncos with 14 points. Western is now 13-9 overall with a 5-4 record in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos will play at Buffalo on Friday.
