(Lansing-Gongwer News Service) The sponsor of a proposed Religious Freedom Restoration Act in the Michigan Legislature says the bill should move forward despite the national controversy surrounding a similar law in Indiana.
State Senator Mike Shirkey tells the Gongwer News Service that the outcry over the Indiana law was “pretty much expected”. The Republican whose district includes Branch, Hillsdale and Jackson Counties says he’s proud of the Indiana Legislature for passing the bill and the state’s governor Mike Pence for signing it into law.
Shirkey rejected suggestions that the legislation could lead to discrimination. He hopes the bill will be acted on before the Legislature breaks for the summer.
