(MPRN-Lansing) Governor Rick Snyder’s administration is considering its next move after a judge blocked a state takeover of four academically struggling elementary schools in the East Detroit district.

The state could try to lift a restraining order issued last Friday by a judge in Macomb County. East Detroit schools Superintendent Ryan McLeod says the district went to court because the state still hasn’t proven it knows how to turn around failing schools.

“Our greatest fear is that we’re in a situation where, on the other side of this, we’re worse off than we were prior to state involvement.”

McLeod says the appointment of a CEO by the state is also an unfunded mandate because the district bears the costs.

The East Detroit district only recently retired a deficit that contributed to the schools’ poor academic performance. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for mid-June.
