State May Have Trouble Changing Vehicle Registration Fees to Boost Road Funding

(MPRN-Lansing) The state may have hit a snag in its ability to raise vehicle registration fees to pay for road repairs.

Legislation that Gov. Rick Snyder signed into law last week depends in part on raising vehicle registration fees to boost road funding. But the Michigan Secretary of State’s office doesn’t have the source code it needs to make those changes to its computer system. So it’s suing Hewlett-Packard to turn it over.

A judge is expected to hand down his ruling on the request on Monday.

“We have asked the judge to order HP to turn over this source code, because we really would need to have access to that code in order to implement a vehicle registration fee change,”

said GisgieGendreau, a spokesperson for the secretary of state’s office.

“Not having that source code will significantly impair the state’s ability to implement any registration fee changes.”

The Gongwer news service first reported on the issue. The request is part of a larger lawsuit accusing HP of not holding up its end of a contract to upgrade online services for the secretary of state’s office.
