State Rep. Sean McCann announces state Senate bid

Sean McCann

The new 20th state Senate district will be made up of Kalamazoo County.

State Representative Sean McCann is in his second term in the state House. The Democrat previously served 10 years on the Kalamazoo City Commission.

In a statement announcing his campaign, McCann says the state is moving in the wrong direction. The representative says "equal access to high quality education for young people" and "innovative economic development ideas that drive job creation." are his top priorities.

McCann's announcement had been expected. Democratic County Commissioner Dave Buskirk has announced he will run for McCann's state House seat.

The district is currently represented by Republican Tonya Schuitmaker. But the new boundaries will put Schuitmaker's home of Lawton in a new district that includes Van Buren, Allegan and part of Kent Counties. Schuitmaker hasn't said what her plans are for the 2014 campaign.
