State Senate Candidates Discuss Economy, Education and More During Forum

The candidates running for state Senate in Michigan's 20th District met Wednesday night for a forum on the Western Michigan University campus.

The district includes all of Kalamazoo County. Republican Tonya Schuitmaker has represented it for the last four years. But new district boundaries placed in a district that includes Van Buren, Allegan and part of Kent County.

Two state Representatives are running for the state Senate seat, Republican Margaret O'Brien and Democrat Sean McCann. Former state Representative Lorence Wenke is running for the seat as a Libertarian.

The forum was sponsored by WMUK and Friends of WMU. Candidates responded to questions on a broad range of issues, including education, the economy, energy, roads, same-sex marriage and laws governing marijuana.
