State Representative Jon Hoadley says as now, he would recommend voters approve a 1% increase in the sales tax.
The proposal on the May ballot is part of a plan to pay for road repair in Michigan. During his State of the State Address Tuesday night Governor Snyder called for voters to pass the measure. Hoadley, a Democrat who represents Kalamazoo in the Michigan House, says overall it's a good package. But he says lawmakers should not have passed the decision on to voters.
Snyder also called for lawmakers to discuss expanding the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. Hoadley, one of two openly gay Representatives elected in November, says he believes those protections will come eventually. He says it remains to be seen if that will happen through the Legislature or through a ballot initiative.
Hoadley says he supports looking for efficiency in government services. Snyder called for streamlining state departments to help lower-income residents. Hoadley says the details are important in determining whether or not those ideas will get his support.
